Buying a used vehicle is one of the most stressful financial decisions for everyday consumers. Glossy tire shine and a freshly vacuumed interior can easily disguise thousands of dollars in impending transmission or suspension failures.

Under-The-Hood Vital Inspections

  • Oil Fill Cap (Under-side): Look for milky-brown residue or “mayonnaise” foam, which indicates coolant mixing with engine oil from a blown head gasket.
  • Brake Fluid Clarity: Fresh fluid is honey-colored. Dark, murky brown fluid contains dissolved copper and moisture, signaling aged calipers and ABS valves.
  • Cold Start Engine Sound: Insist the vehicle is cold when you arrive. Listen for metallic valve train tapping or timing chain rattle during the first 5 seconds of ignition.

Road Test Evaluation Guide

During your test drive, find a quiet stretch of open road. Shift through all forward gears under moderate acceleration. Any delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse indicates worn clutch packs or slipping valve body solenoids.
